The Community

This is a place with a youthful energy – and an eye to the future.

This evolving mountain and oceanfront community is home to over 17,000 residents. Once known chiefly for its industrial and transport sectors, Squamish has become a mecca for outdoor sport enthusiasts in recent decades. World-class climbing, windsports, hiking, mountain biking, sailing, fishing, and a host of other outdoor sports unfold here year round, against a breathtaking natural backdrop. Not surprisingly, Squamish has a younger profile than the rest of the province, with 60% of the population under the age of 40, and median age of 36.

For all that, Squamish is a community with strong family values. The district has a higher average than the rest of BC for two-parent households. The Squamish School District is comprised of 7 primary schools, two secondary schools, and a number of post-secondary institutions. There are also two universities here, resulting in a highly educated community, and a strong workforce.
